Preparing For An Online Job Interview: What To Wear

4 min read

Julia Yurchak, Senior Recruitment Consultant at Keller Executive Search, was recently quoted in The Yorkshire Post, sharing her expertise on how to choose what to wear to an online interview. In the article, titled “How to prepare for an online job interview: what to wear – clothes and outfit tips from a recruitment expert” and written by Alex Nelson, Yurchak describes the importance of dressing professionally even when the interview is to be conducted virtually through platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

“It can be tempting to only look presentable from the waist up during a virtual interview, but we advise our candidates to ditch the pyjama bottoms and dress to impress from head to toe. There are subtle but important reasons for doing this,” Yurchak stated.

The article then continues to explain why what candidates wear to virtual interviews is important, and provides suggestions for suitable clothing items.

Insights from Julia Yurchack, Senior Recruitment Consultant

In the article, Julia commented that it is important to wear exactly what you would’ve for an in-person interview when you have a virtual one. The reason for this, according to Julia, is that how we dress can have an affect on our behavior. Since how we are perceived during an interview can play a vital role in how successful or unsuccessful we are, dressing professionally is equally important. Clothes can also signal your attitude and character on a subliminal level.

Examples of What to Wear and What to Avoid

The article continues to say that wearing neutral colours to an interview can subconsciously signal to an employer that you are someone who would work well as part of a team and even flourish in a work environment with an established corporate ladder. It also shows the interviewer that you are taking the interview seriously.

Because the first impression you make is so important and a lot of communication happens with body language, wearing clothes that leave a positive perception of you and signal to interviewers that you are the kind of candidate that they need is crucial. It becomes a foundation you can build upon with your competencies and experience.

According to Yurchak, “business casual” attire is ideal. This includes things like:

  • Blazers
  • Buttoned Tops/ Shirts
  • Blouses
  • Buttoned Vests
  • Formal Sweaters
  • Formal Ties
  • Khakis
  • Midi Skirts
  • Polo Shirts
  • Sports Coats
  • Trousers/ Long Pants

According to Yurchak, it is best to avoid casual clothes like t-shirts, denims, or sweatpants, as well as distracting, bright colours and patterns, unless the job is in a creative field. The same goes for excessive accessories.
