Keller Executive Search partnered with a fast-growing pharmaceutical company to place a COO with the regulatory depth, multi-site manufacturing know-how, and professional instinct to guide the company through its next stage of growth.
A founder-led pharmaceutical and wellness company with more than $100M in annual revenue and rapid growth throughout many regulated verticals. The business is FDA, DEA, 503A and 503B compliant, and includes compounding pharmacies, GMP compliant manufacturing facilities, third-party logistics operations, and multiple telehealth platforms. Instead of operating as one company, it operates as a portfolio of over 40 interdependent companies, many scaling simultaneously. The founder and CEO drive the organization forward, with new pharmacy openings, a big manufacturing facility build-out, and a few telehealth launches happening at the same time.
The original project was a CEO search. A few weeks into the engagement, the brief changed. The founder would stay on as CEO, and the new executive would be hired as Chief Operating Officer, reporting directly to the CEO. The weight of the role was still there. It needed someone who could absorb a lot of operational complexity across marketing, legal, technology, compliance, and pharmacy operations, and bring coherence to a business at the forefront of its own growth. The hiring profile was narrow. What the organization needed was real pharmaceutical regulatory fluency, particularly around 503B compounding and GMP manufacturing, but also the instincts of a builder: someone who would listen before acting, understand what was already working, and operate as a true partner to the founder, instead of a parallel authority. Technical credentials and cultural fit were equally important. Keller Executive Search partnered closely with the new SVP of Human Resources to develop the candidate profile and benchmark compensation, and we worked closely with the leadership team to develop the assessment process.
From a detailed discovery process with the SVP of Human Resources and the founder, we developed a precise brief: experience in multi-site manufacturing, exposure to 503B or 503A regulations, a track record of scaling complex multi-entity organizations, and the personal profile needed to thrive in a founder-led business defined by entrepreneurial intensity. A shortlist was prepared and presented in stages, each candidate being accompanied by a detailed profile and our written assessment, with a structured process leading from the initial screening and vetting process to direct interviews conducted by the founder and a final board panel.
Keller Executive Search brought in an executive with 25 years of biopharmaceutical operations experience in clinical manufacturing, commercial supply, aseptic operations, and contract manufacturing. He had previously built and scaled a contract development and manufacturing business unit across sites in the US, Europe, and China. He had also led a parenteral drug manufacturing campus through full expansion and Annex 1 qualification, and led a 503B compounding pharmacy operation in California. He managed multiple FDA inspections, BLA and NDA submissions, and multi-site quality systems, and held large-scale P&L accountability. He was selected from a shortlist of strong candidates, completed the board panel, and took the job.
The organization now has an operational leader in place who has the regulatory depth, multi-entity experience, and founder-compatible instinct to work alongside a CEO and manage one of the most complex growth stages in the healthcare sector.
