Specialty InsuranceVice President of Risk Management
Written policies alone could not provide the operational insight this newly created risk function needed. The insurer sought a senior leader who understood transportation first-hand and could turn that experience into stronger controls and sounder risk decisions.
The quality of a client’s internal procedures directly affects the risk that this specialist insurer is underwriting. The business works with companies that have complex supply chains and where third-party partners do key elements of the work. The client is part of a wider insurance group, but functions on a lean structure with close ties to its clients. Leadership wanted a way to visualize the day-to-day functionality of procedures that didn’t simply rely on written documentation.
The client required a person who had operational credibility and showed clear judgment in an insurance setting. Candidates needed strong experience in transportation, as well as an understanding of procedures, partner controls, contractual exposure, and loss prevention. They also had to challenge weak practices in a constructive way, earning trust while also guiding clients and internal teams.
When commercial relationships and existing client conflicts were taken into account, the available market was reduced significantly. So, every potential employer had to be carefully vetted before contact, further narrowing an already highly specialized pool.
Keller Executive Search looked outside the conventional insurance profiles and instead focused the search on senior leaders from logistics and supply-chain functions. Resumes that had evidence of direct ownership of processes, external partner management, loss prevention, and advisory work were highlighted. Employer mapping excluded organizations affected by commercial conflicts even before any confidential approach was made.
Structured interviews then explored real-life examples of control failures, compliance problems, security concerns, and tough operational decisions. The discussions revealed how each candidate exercised judgment, communicated findings, and translated complex issues into actionable recommendations. A short list was taken through a number of leadership interviews, and the finalists also completed psychometric assessments. Breaking these stages apart, it allowed decision makers to assess technical capability, communication style, and team fit rather than reducing them to one overall impression.
The process yielded a candidate whose background was in line with the operational and advisory requirements of the role. The candidate went on to complete further interviews, accepted the offer, and signed the written contract. The client would conduct all necessary background checks before the appointment could be officially concluded. The chosen professional had broad experience in transportation including process governance, partner qualification, security, and operational risk controls.
With the position now filled, practical experience can now play a more direct role in decisions on client guidance, risk selection, and loss prevention. The new leader will put structured reviews in place to identify procedural weaknesses and support realistic corrective action. Proven repeatable methods can also be implemented to make consistency better while keeping the function close to day-to-day operations. The appointment provides a foundation to build a dedicated operational risk team as the work expands.
