A US Defense Gateway for an Indian Space Situational Awareness Startup

To break into the US defense market, a chief executive was needed who could navigate ownership compliance, work federal procurement, and build a commercial base in Colorado Springs.

The Client

This India-based space technology company focuses on space situational awareness by tracking objects in orbit to help satellite operators, insurers, and governments understand the congestion and debris environment in space. With Series B funding secured and an expanding international customer base, the company was ready to establish a permanent US presence. The primary market for its defense and government contracts is the United States, and the operational home for that business would be Colorado Springs, where Space Force, US Space Command, and the American defense space industry are concentrated.

The Challenge

Getting into the U.S. defense and government market takes more than an office. Companies that do business with the Department of Defense are subject to a compliance regime that can place conditions on the ownership structure of the company. The US arm of the company needed a chief executive who could take on a sizable ownership stake as part of the job.

That, plus aerospace technical fluency, defense procurement experience, commercial judgment, and a Colorado Springs base made it a very specialized leadership search.

The Solution

The role combined market entry, defense procurement, and ownership structure, so the search was calibrated around executives who could meet the structural demands of the US entity as well as bring credibility in federal space and defense markets. The assessment focused on government contract vehicles, DoD procurement cycles, Colorado Springs relationships, and alignment with the ownership requirements of the position.

The Results

The result was a CEO profile that fit the structural, commercial, and geographic demands of the mandate. The leader chosen had aerospace training, graduate business education, experience in growing a defense enterprise into a much larger platform, and direct experience with major federal contract vehicles. He was also well-connected in the Colorado Springs space and defense community, and ready to support the ownership structure the US entity needed.

The Impact

With this leadership in place, the US entity was better positioned to build its American defense presence. The appointment married the discipline of federal procurement, venture-backed growth ambition, sector credibility, and local market relationships.
